Forest Lakes is a mixed-use master planned development in Nova Scotia, with the intention of becoming a benchmark for luxury lifestyle communities. It will include an 18-hole golf course, 2,700 residential units, and recreational, commercial, and community uses. Viridia developed an overarching sustainability framework to guide the development team through planning and construction tasks. It included principles, goals, and indictors that addressed energy, water, sewer, carbon footprint, wildlife, land use, building material; global and local environmental loading; international, and local on and off site transportation; economic growth, and social welfare. Viridia assessed various certification programs and conducted initial sourcing of local supplies and suppliers. The framework development was followed by an examination of appropriate methods and technologies for the development and identification of suitable contractors and partners.
